Learning Business from Disney World

Learning-Business-from-Disney-World7If you don’t have a new idea for a business just do what Disney World does: do everything better than everyone else

As an entrepreneur, no matter where you go and what you do, you are always looking at what other businesses are doing and what you can learn from them. I am just as guilty of this as anyone as I am constantly on the look out for new ideas from the businesses I patronize.

Recently, I had the good fortune to be able to visit Disney World in Florida, USA. Of course, I had a wonderful time experiencing the fun and magic that Disney World provides; but more than that, looking at Disney World reminded me of a valuable lesson I’ve learned as an entrepreneur: success comes not from doing something new, but doing it better than everyone else.

When starting a business, you should have an idea from the very beginning regarding why your business will be successful. There are generally three different aims for a new business which lead to success. You must either: do something that no one else is doing; do something that other businesses are doing, but within a new and distinct niche; or do something that others are doing, but do it better than everyone else.

The first method is the least likely, as very few people are innovative enough to create an entirely new product or service. Disneyland, when opened in 1955, was not the first theme park in the world. It’s wasn’t the first place with roller coasters, it wasn’t the first place with cartoon characters, and it wasn’t the first place with souvenir t-shirts. Yet today, Disneyland, Disney World, and the Disney family of theme parks are far and away the most popular theme parks on the planet.

Is it because they have found their own niche in the industry that no one is exploiting? Perhaps, certainly the Disney cartoon and film franchises are unique, and the idea of a theme park and resort based around shows and characters in addition to rides is something you don’t see everywhere. However, just down the road from Disney

World in Florida is Universal Studios, two theme parks with rides and shows based on Universal film franchises and cartoons. The niche is pretty much the same, yet Disney World’s attendance dwarfs that of Universal.

What I saw is that Disney World’s massive popularity stems from it’s ability to do what it does better than any other competitor out there. Disney World itself is not that much different than other theme parks centered on film and cartoon characters. However, Disney does everything so much better.

Everything at Disney World is cleaner. The employees are friendlier and more helpful. The parking is far more organized and intuitive. The food is better. The rides are more interesting and the shows are more fun. Every tiny detail has been taken care of, and although it may not be obvious to the average visitor, I could see the care put into every single aspect of the parks.

You may not want to hear it, but your business idea is probably not something new or something different. So if you want to make your business a success, you need to follow the example of Disney World.

Don’t spend your time and effort trying to be different from your competitors, spend your time and effort being better than them.
